EVENING IN THE QUAY
Evening in Istanbul. Going down to the quay, we meet the railway station, the terminal of Europe. Closing my eyes I can see Hercules Poirot disembarking from Orient Express, wearing his well-ironed suit. The rich Europeans of the Interwar period, were attracted by the mysterious East. Some decades later, in 1964, in that station, about fifteen thousands Greek people were forced to leave Istanbul, buying a ticket without return. On the quay the vendors sell baked corn and chestnuts, young people walk laughing and boats are anchored. At the crossroads of two continents, Asia seems so close and so far to me ...
